pole: All planets and moons have geographic poles. Geographic poles are the points on the surface through which the axis of rotation passes. If a planet has a magnetic field, then it has magnetic poles. The points on the surface that act like the ends of a bar magnet are also called poles. The point on the surface that acts like the north pole of a bar magnet is called magnetic north. The point on the surface that acts like the south pole of a bar magnet is called magnetic south. Earth has both geographic and magnetic poles. However, magnetic north is not the same place as geographic north and magnetic south is not the same place as geographic south.
